Lessons for Parents: Building a Strong Foundation for Your Child’s Future Well-being

One of the caps I wear is that of a children’s well-being coach, focusing on the emotional, social, and mental health of children aged 9–16.

In light of the recent tragedy involving a young employee at EY, which has sparked discussions about work-life balance, Deloitte has taken a commendable step in forming an external committee to review its employee practices. While this situation highlights challenges faced by adults in demanding corporate environments, it offers important lessons for parents raising the next generation.

As someone passionate about child development, I believe it’s critical that we prepare our children not just for academic success but for emotional and mental well-being in all spheres of life. Here are a few lessons from this event that parents can reflect on:

  1. Teach Balance Early
Children who are taught early on to balance work and rest will carry this skill into adulthood. Help your child prioritize activities that bring joy and relaxation, so they don’t become overwhelmed later in life.
  2. Model Healthy Boundaries
Children learn by observing their parents. If you model strong boundaries between work and home life, your children will be more likely to adopt similar practices as they grow.
  3. Foster Emotional Intelligence
Emotional resilience is key to handling life’s pressures. Equip your child with the tools to manage stress, express emotions healthily, and seek support when needed. These skills are lifelong assets.
  4. Encourage Open Communication
Just as Deloitte is scrutinizing its practices, families should regularly check in with their children. Create an environment where your child feels safe discussing their challenges, whether academic, social, or emotional.
  5. Prepare Them for the Future
The workforce will continue to demand much from our children when they grow up. Teaching them time management, self-care, and resilience now will help them navigate those future challenges more successfully.

Parenting is about planting seeds that will shape your child’s future. Let’s help them build lives of balance, well-being, and emotional strength.
